Opening Day!!!

Today is the day that baseball fans have been waiting for since the final out of the World Series. What is it that every baseball fan has been waiting for? What is it that Yankee, Red Sox, Rays, Mets, Phillies, Braves, Dodgers, Marlins, and every other rival fan have in common? The answer is Opening Day!!! No matter who you root for you love opening day!
Opening Day is the day that you grab your jersey and your hat and you wear it with pride. Opening Day is the day that gives you hope that your team will be playing in October and lifting that trophy.

Opening day is the day that friends try to tell other friends who will be in the World Series and who will win it. You know what I mean. You say who will be in the big game and then you say who you will like to see in the big game. As a Mets and Rays fan myself I would LOVE to see them both playing in the World Series, and no it is not impossible!!

Tonight for the season opener we have a classic game to start the season. In fact a very old rival between two teams: yankees vs red sox!! Always a favorite game of mine to watch because these two teams never play easy against each other. Probably one of the best series in baseball..next to the Subway Series in my opinion. So, do not miss tonights game at 8:05 on ESPN 2. Lets see who will win..Jeter or Ellsbury! Both are great players for two great teams. Yes, I am a Rays fan, but I cannot deny that both of those teams have played well in the past.

Well, happy Opening Day to you and may your team play well this year!! Ok, not too well because I want my Mets and Rays to go all the way!!

Monday Mix

So here is a quick run through of some current events happening in some sports lately. I call this my Monday Mix because it is definatley going to be a mix of sports. Buckle yourself in safely because here we go!

Golf: Jim Furyk ends his drought (32 months and 58 tournaments) and won on Sunday!!! -13 was the magic number!! He won by just one stroke over another great golfer Choi. And who says golf is not fun without Woods??? Oh, yes, speaking of Woods, he will be back in the game at the Masters this April. He also did two interviews (one with ESPN and one with the Golf Channel) that were on the air Sunday night. Personaly, his one interiew was enough for me. He is definately not the "great" person that many thought him to be. Yes, I know not to judge and that he only needs to ask forgiveness of certain people; however, actions do have consequences and I think that is what he is going to have to deal with for many more months. I doubt that he will win the Masters, but let us see how far he goes in the tournament. He has ALOT more on his mind these days than just golf!

Baseball: Poor poor Twins! Their closer Nathan will be having surgery and will miss the season as a result. On the up for the Twins though they did just sign a deal with Mauer for an 8 year estension worth $184m! (See why they are poor lol)
Following some Spring Training standings here is an interesting one to note: Rays are 12-6 with a winning percentage of .667 and their A.L. East rival and World Series Champs the Yankees are 8-10 with a winning percentage of .444. Hmmmm below 500 baseball for the preseason. I guess money does not buy everything at that.

Nascar: A big congrats is in order for Jimmie Johnson as he wins at Bristol. His third victory so far of the season. He was sixth with ten laps to go. He beat out other well known racers Tony Stewart and Kurt Bush who took second and third.

Well, not all the sports, but still good enough for some Monday Mix. Should be an interesting week in the world of sports.

Baseball time!! Wait..he is gone???

As many of you know the time has at last come for the start of that wonderful American sport we all know and love: BASEBALL!!!! Ok, so maybe I am just a tad bit too excited about this, but I truly do love baseball! Am I the only one who cries at the end of the world series? Ok maybe I am. :)
The next lists of blogs that I will be doing will go through teams and tell who has left and who has arrived into your favorite team. These lists are ever changing at times it seems so please forgive me if some things change...will do my best to keep things up to date. The purpose of these next posts are to help you with the look of confusion on your face as you see your beloved team and say, "huh, when did he become a (insert team name)" or "hey wait! when did we lose him"?
Well, since I am in Tampa and my good buddy Suzette is a Rays fan and has waited patiently for these posts let us begin with the Rays.

Ok, as always bad news first...who the rays of lost. :(
During the offseason the Rays lost (brace yourself these names hurt): 2b Akinori Iwamura....told you it hurt....he went to the Pirates; P Jesse Chavez..sorry but do not remember you buddy; P Ramon Ramirez...went to Boston (BOOOOO) :); C Gregg Zaun..another one that hurts...went to Milwaukee; C Michel Hernandez to Baltimore; Gabe Gross....this one hurts the most to me...he is an excellent role model; P Troy Percival..yep..another loss; Brian Shouse a pitcher.
Yes, some big names were lost. What hurts the most is many of those guys were on the team that lead the Rays to their first ever A.L.East Championship title and first trip to the World Series...to all those guys the fans thank you.

Well....the good news now..who the Rays got.
During the offseason the Rays picked up: P Rafael Soriano from the Braves (this Mets fan says thank you btw); C Kelly Shoppach from Cleveland;
well..had others but were really no big names..at any rate these players did a great job the last few years in getting to the playoffs so do not give up on this team. These players will not give up for one second and this team as a whole will enjoy being the underdog team again! The Rays do not mind playing the big names like Red Sox or Yankees because they know they have owned these teams recently. This team shows teams like the Yankees that a great team can and does exist without the major bucks being spent...look out A.L.East..the Rays want a ring!!!

Are You Kidding Me???

Unless you completely dislike sports or do not even know the news around you then you have heard about Tim Tebow and this so called "controversial" commercial that will air during the Super Bowl next week. The commercial will discuss the topic of choosing life and I guess to some that is offensive. Really?? What is so controversial about a woman (Tebows mother) telling her story of her son and how she chose not to have an abortion when she was told it would be a good idea? She chose life and look at the life that she chose! Tim Tebow!!!

Tim Tebow is by far one of the most outstanding QBs to me. He is a great player in my opinion, but even more so I believe he is a great person. Just look at this guy for a moment: he has talent, popularity, good looks (ok I confess he is cute) and what does this college star QB do during spring break? He goes on missions trips..thats right....missions trips. Not to a place in Mexico to party, not to some place in FL to party, not to Paris or wherever else college students go on spring break, but on missions trips.

Tebow is the son of missionarys and his faith shows in the way he carries himself. He is not some stuck up QB who hopes to make it in the pros...he is a QB who has taken what he has been given and used it to help others and to spread the Word of God. Look at his face in each game and you will see a Bible verse written on it...and it is not always the same verse either.

I do not really believe that this whole made up "controversy" is about choosing life, but I think it is more about the way someine is living his life..as a Christian. You may say that I am making something out of nothing by that statement, but believe me if someone is trying to make something out of nothing it is the people who are trying to get that commercial stopped.

They argue that the commercial will suggest to teens and others that it is ok to go against the doctors and that it is a pro life commercial. They argue that a woman has the right to do whatever to her body. Well, yes, she does have the right, but remember one thing, what abortion does has nothing to do with her body. It has to do with the body of a little life..yes...I said life.

Why is it that any type of content that is inappropriate can be viewed on tv and any opinion that is "extreme" can be given as long as it does not have any "values"? Just something that has always intrigued me. So, this Super Bowl I will be watching for the tebow commercial and I will be proud that a woman chose to have her baby because her baby has touched so many lives and I believe will continue to touch even more lives.

I know this is a sports blog, but I just had to give my opinion on the matter. GO TIM TEBOW!!!

:(

Yes, as a Jets fan and as a perosn rooting for the Viking all I can say is :(. The jets look so strong anmd they played rather well, but towards the end of the game the Colts just proved how well of a team that they are. I still believe congrats are in order for Rex Ryan and the NY Jets for making it thus far and stunning their doubters. NY you should be proud!
Colts...you have done it again!! Going to a Super Bowl and this time with the guy who sat under Dungy! Congrats! First year as a head coach and off to the "big game" you go! Manning is by far at the prime of his game and this guy is dangerous...yes...dangerous!
The Vikings vs Saints game did not dissappoint the fans either! Was a "sit at the edge of your seat" type of game! Favre fell short, but due only to the turnovers that the Viking had given the Saints. On the last drive of regulation Favre could have won the game though in my opinion. He still had room to run and to get the 1st down and be withing field goal range with not very much time left on the clock. Oh well though...just was not their day to win.
Congrats are in order to the Saints as well! All year thry played like a winning team and it comes as no surprise to many that this team has a ticket to south Florida now. Except for the final two games of the regular season the Saints have been dominant. Brees is definately a star QB and a clear leader on his team. Happy for the city of New Orleans as their team goes to the Super Bowl.
The Super Bowl this year will definately be a classic game in the making! Brees vs Manning! Will be a high scoring game, but look for the high scores to come toward the 2nd half of the game. These two teams know how to score and to keep the opponent on their toes.
I am looking forward to just sitting back and relaxing a Super Bowl this year. One where i am not sick to my stomach until the game ends...guess that is the only good part about having your team not make it!

Super Bowl???

Ok, this past Sunday and Saturday we all saw two great games. Well...depends on who you are a fan of I guess. Dallas played so well in order to get into the playoffs (played Philly twice) and then they sank. After getting the first playoff win in years and the first ever playoff win for Romo the Cowboys looked as if they never showed up last week. Sorry Dallas fans, but as a Giants fan I must smile and say "bye bye".
The Saints came into the their came ever so ready. The Saints proved all their doubters wrong by creaming their opponent. Maybe the Saints were just saving all of their energy for the playoffs and did not mind at all that they did not "finish strong". Drew Brees and the Saints definately have a hard game to play this Sunday though....Favre and the Vikings.
Yes, Favre and the Vikings. Does that sound weird or what? Just think about how all those Packers fans must hurt to see their QB who they have loved for years in a purple uniform instead of green and yellow. Favre may be 40 years old and the oldest starting QB in the playoffs, but do not let his age fool you...this guy still has it! He can still keep a play alive and do that move to the right as he waits for a man to get open....how can he throw so accurate on the move? I will never know.
The Vikings vs the Saints will be a game that you do not want to miss. Brees and Bush vs Favre and Peterson. As well as the Saints are playing I must go with Favre and the Vikings. Game will be extremely close and may even go into overtime. Two great QBs so we shall see which one marches into Florida in a few weeks.

Moving on to the Jets vs the Colts. The Jets vs the Colts is the game I am looking forward to the most. The team I wanted to win since the start of the playoffs has been the Jets. So many just laughed and said they could not do it, but the Jets have and they will do it. Read an article 2 days ago on how the Jets reminded the author of the NY Giants when they went to and won their Super Bowl....ummmm didn't I mention that in a previous blog? :) The Jets already beat the Colts earlier this year and one may argue that the Colts did not have their starters in during the entire game. Ok, true; however, what was the score even when the starters were in the game?
The Colts have the home field advantage for this championship game. The Colts played well in their last playoff game and have played well in the past. Manning has become one of the greatest QBs in the NFL and he is dangerous. He plays the game hard and always wants to do his best. Look for Manning to be on top of his game as he prepares to battle the Jets defense.
Jets vs the Colts will be a closer game than people think. In reality the Colts do not have any home field advantage because the Jets have played well on the road. The Jets are looking at the NY Giants and saying that they too can do what the Giants did...head to the Super Bowl and win it! So Sanchez and the Jets vs. Manning and the Colts....rookie vs. the Senior. Another close game for these two with the winner not being named until down to the wire. Battle of field goals in this game I think.
Well, enjoy the games!! Playoffs!!! GOOOO JETS!!!!!!!

Jets Maybe????

Ok, first some background knowledge of me...I am a HUGE NY Giants fan, but since they fell short this year I must go for the Jets. Why? Well, for some strange reason I kind of like them too. Yes, I know, miss never been to Ny but I cannot help but them. I am also rooting for the jets because of their QB: Mark Sanchez. For the first time in all my years of yelling at the t.v. a team listened to me. I told the Jets they needed Sanchez and they took him! AT LAST!!
You can argue that he is not the best QB, but you have to agree with me that he did help his team the last two games before the playoffs to get into the playoffs. Try being a rookie QB in the NFL and then on top of that know that if you lose then you and your team do not even get to go to the playoffs. I say that makes him good in my book.
Then, last week in his first ever NFL playoff game Sanchez and the Jets head into the Bengals home and beat them! Yes, I was very excited! I feel like this is my own...how do I say it...QB that I put in the Jets hands. Yes, taking too much credit!
Anyway, the Jets played so well and they were not even home. Tomorrow the jets must go to San Diego in order to continue their playoff run. Remember anoth team from NY that a few years ago came in as the wild card team as well? Remember the other NY team that went to the Super Bowl by winning playoff games on the road as well as road games to just make it to the playoffs? The is the NY Giants...who just happen to be Super Bowl Champs!
Oh, by the way, they share a stadium with the Jets. So, before you just throw the towel in on the Jets think back to that other NY team that did the same thing these Jets are doing. Yes, the jets are not the same team as the Giants, but they are also quite powerful. Look for a good and close tomorrow as the Jets fly into San Diego and they soar all over the Chargers. :)
Final score: 27-14. Ok, so maybe closer. Enjoy and GO JETS!!!!!
